Island Banana Farmer Faces Existential Threat From Fungal Disease
A fungal pathogen spreading across the Indian Ocean threatens to devastate Reunion's banana farmers.
Gilbert Bafinal grows bananas in Ravine des Cabris, and the math of his livelihood is stark. Ninety percent of his income comes from a single crop. If Fusarium wilt Tropical Race 4, known as TR4, reaches Reunion's soil, he says plainly: "It would be total worry. I would not know what else to do." That is not hyperbole. It is the arithmetic of an island farmer with no easy fallback.
TR4 has already established itself across the Indian Ocean neighborhood. The fungus was detected in Mozambique in 2013, in Mayotte in 2019, and in Grande Comore in 2023. Madagascar is also affected. Reunion sits in the middle of this geography, separated from infected territory by water and, for now, by luck.
The disease works quietly and without a cure. Dr. Isabelle Robène, a researcher at Cirad within the Joint Research Unit on Plant Populations and Bioaggressors in Tropical Environments, described the mechanism: "The fungus penetrates banana plants at the level of the root system, then progressively invades the plant's vascular vessels." Leaves yellow. The plant deteriorates. Death follows. What makes TR4 particularly devastating is what happens after. "Once installed, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to rid oneself of this pathogen," Robène warned. Fungal spores survive indefinitely in soil. No chemical treatment can eradicate them.
TR4 targets the Cavendish cultivar specifically, which represents more than 40 percent of global banana production and roughly 99 percent of worldwide banana exports. Bafinal's fields are planted primarily with Grande Naine, a Cavendish variety that researchers have identified as particularly susceptible. A confirmed outbreak on Reunion would force him to uproot his plants, transition to resistant varieties, replant, and then wait years before production recovered to viable levels. Even that path carries uncertainty. Bafinal noted that consumer preference for taste creates a barrier to simply switching cultivars, since a different flavor profile could reduce the market value of whatever he grows next.
By contrast, Reunion has navigated banana shortages before, most often after cyclone damage. During those periods, prices on certain markets have exceeded 8 to 10 euros per kilogram for several months. A TR4 establishment would be a different order of problem entirely. Some parcels could become permanently unusable for current banana varieties. The island would rely more heavily on imports, and transportation costs would pass directly to consumers, turning a daily staple into something closer to a luxury.
The most common entry point for the fungus is not a shipment or a commercial consignment. It is a cutting tucked into luggage, or contaminated soil on the sole of a shoe. In 2025, Reunion's customs authorities documented 157 instances of illegal introduction of plant products. Approximately 30 percent originated from mainland France, 25 percent from Madagascar, and nearly 20 percent from Mayotte, including goods arriving from the Comoros via that island. Flights from Mayotte now receive enhanced monitoring. A prefectoral order dated April 24, 2017, prohibits the introduction of fresh plant material without required phytosanitary procedures, whether by mail or in baggage. Violators face up to three years of imprisonment and fines equivalent to twice the value of seized goods.
On the ground, roughly fifty sentinel plots are being monitored through an official system directed by the Daaf and implemented by the Departmental Federation of Plant Protection Groups, or FDGDON. Cirad has developed a rapid detection test deployable directly in the field, without heavy laboratory equipment. Any positive result would require confirmation by the National Food Safety, Environment and Labor Agency, or Anses, in Reunion.
Éric Lucas, a diversity officer at the Chamber of Agriculture of Reunion, put the current situation plainly: "We have had suspicions, alerts, but no confirmed cases. The disease is very present in Mayotte, the Comoros, and also Madagascar. It is alarming to the extent that people travel a lot and can bring the disease back." His message to travelers was direct: "The danger is too great to risk bringing back a cutting or a plant."
Robène echoed that, stressing the need to strengthen communication and awareness among travelers returning from affected zones, alongside biosecurity measures such as disinfecting shoe soles after visits to contaminated regions. Lucas framed it simply for the general public: "In Reunion, our varieties are very good. We do not need to look elsewhere and bring back something new."
